Do You Plan for Your Down Time?
Downtime isn’t something most of us plan for—or even want. It feels counterintuitive. We push ourselves to run at full throttle, always chasing the next opportunity, the next deadline, the next project. But sometimes, stepping back and catching your breath is exactly what you need before leaping back into the rat race.
Like many people working in the gig economy, I move from project to project. Gaps between projects are inevitable. And while those gaps often feel uncomfortable—especially when income pauses—they also hold value. Downtime gives us the space to be human again.
A World in Transition
We’re living in a rapidly shifting world. The old education system was designed to produce workers for the industrial era: people ready for factory lines, mass service roles, or structured career paths. That model is outdated.
We transitioned into the Information Technology era, and many resisted, burying their heads in the sand. Now, we’re stepping into something new—something undefined. This transition is shaking up how we live and work, forcing us to re-examine what it really means to be human.
The Shift in Skills
Two decades ago, blue-collar workers felt the first wave of this disruption. Skilled tradespeople were replaced by machines, and many had to reskill or move into new trades. Today, trades are in high demand again, as infrastructure and housing struggle to keep up with growth.
Now it’s white-collar workers facing disruption. AI is replacing tasks once reserved for entry-level jobs. That’s unprecedented. For the first time, an entire generation is entering a workforce where traditional “starting points” have been automated away.
Where do you learn life skills when the world before you can’t offer a roadmap? The AI revolution is here, and we’re all navigating it together.
Returning to Humanity
Paradoxically, AI and emerging tech give us an opportunity: to step back and rediscover what it means to be human.
We can step away from the information superhighway, pause the doomscrolling, and look beyond generative art and endless feeds. These tools are incredible—but they don’t replace connection.
Time is precious. Don’t throw it all at screens. Take time to connect with yourself, with others, and with the world that’s been here for millions of years. Technology is only a heartbeat in comparison.
You are valued. You are worthy. Don’t forget who you are.
